Take out health insurance over the age of 18

When you turn 18 there are suddenly many more things you can or even have to think about. You can go on the road with your driver’s license and you now also have the right to vote. You are also required to take out health insurance. Because turning 18 is already difficult enough, the health insurance is explained step by step below. This way you can make a well-considered choice for all elements in the health insurance policy. Take out health insurance over the age of 18: what should you pay attention to?

Basic insurance

You don’t actually get to choose the basic insurance. Health insurance above the age of 18 is mandatory. If you don’t, you could even be fined. It is of course useful to have one. This insurance policy reimburses you for standard medical care, such as the general practitioner and certain medicines. This also includes admission to hospital after an accident. It is of course not nice that you have to pay suddenly, but it is nice that you are in good hands if something really happens.

Supplementary insurance

You can insure yourself for specialist care with a supplementary insurance policy. This is for a visit to a gynaecologist, a physiotherapist or an acupuncturist. Supplementary insurance can be cheaper than the care you want to purchase within a year. Make a good list of what your expected costs are for that year, so that you really don’t pay too much.

Increase deductible or not?

The next point to consider is the deductible. Are you going to increase it or not? If you are not going to visit specialists this year, it might be a good idea. You do not pay extras at the end of the year, but you do save tens per month on insurance. Consider this and ask your peers how they have arranged this.

This is how dental insurance works

If you only pay one visit to the dentist per year, this insurance is not very cheap. If you go twice a year or more, it’s a good idea. If you also use oral hygiene, it is highly recommended. You then pay nothing afterwards for the dentist. This is all covered by the insurance you have taken out.

Discount with a collective

Do you really want the cheapest health insurance in 2023? Then see if you can use a collective scheme. This gives you a ten percent discount on the basic insurance and sometimes also on the supplementary insurance. Ask your employer or sports club what is possible.
