Does your health insurance match the costs you incur?

We all have health insurance. If it’s right, at least. If you think when reading these words ‘no, not me!’, then it is high time to take action, because health insurance is mandatory, in the form of basic insurance. With which insurer you take out this, and whether you also opt for additional insurance in addition to the basic package, that is up to you. And that freedom of choice immediately makes it so difficult. Because how do you know for sure whether you have taken out the best insurance policy for you? Does your health insurance match the costs you incur?

Take a good look at the costs you incur

Deciding which health insurance policy is right for you starts with looking at the costs you incur. That is easier said than done, because when it comes to your health you simply have no guarantees. Maybe you’ve never needed a physiotherapist and you think you can cut it out of your coverage, and then promptly throw out your back the following week.

Nevertheless, based on the costs you regularly incur, you can often estimate a little bit what you will need. If you don’t have children and you have neat, straight teeth, you don’t need high coverage for orthodontics. And do you wear dentures? Then you can usually also pass up that separate dental insurance. Take a good look at which costs insurers can reimburse, and which of them you will certainly not use.

Then you also list the costs that you will certainly incur. Do you regularly visit the dentist? Then you would like to be reimbursed. Need physiotherapy almost every year? Then a compensation for this is not an unnecessary luxury. This way you go through all common, but perhaps also less regular costs, and you get a good idea of what your insurance should cover, and what not.

Can you get the costs reimbursed?

Once you have mapped out your expected health care costs, it is important to look for a health insurance policy that fits this as well as possible. Please note that you cannot always be reimbursed for all costs; even good dental insurance often does not cover all dental costs, and unlimited physiotherapy is not always possible either.

The basic insurance is your starting point; this is mandatory and covers a large part of the costs that almost all of us incur. Then you look for an additional package that also covers your other costs. That can be a cheap supplementary insurance if you incur few costs. However, if you incur quite a few healthcare costs, a more expensive variant can often be cheaper in the longer term. This covers more, and prevents you from having to pay for a significant part of your healthcare costs yourself. A matter of deliberation, and above all good calculations, so that you can make the best choice.
