Firm, light, supple, mild or aromatic. Each wine variety has its own character, aromas and flavor profile. For example, if you are talking about a smooth red wine, the wine is accessible, can be combined well with different meals, and the tannins are quite mild and soft. A strong wine is a lot heavier and fits perfectly with a tasty piece of game meat, for example. Which flavor profiles are there, and how exactly can you recognize those flavors and combine them with a dish? We are happy to explain it to you in this article! Recognizing wine types: which flavor profiles are there?
Fresh and dry
In the wine world, a white wine with fresh acidity is labeled as fresh, fresh or tight. Such a fresh wine can occur in both a dry and a sweeter variant. Well-known fresh white wines are, for example, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or Sylvaner. In these wines you can clearly recognize flavors and aromas of, for example, citrus, green apple or pear or spicy or floral aromas. Because of its light and refreshing properties, such a crisp, fresh wine can be perfectly combined with lean fish, poultry or dishes with crustaceans and shellfish, but also with a summer salad, for example.
Soft and supple
Merlot, Pinot Noir or a rhone wine can be called soft, smooth and even creamy. When we talk about a smooth red wine, the wine’s flavor profile is quite mild, light, and not too overpowering. So the opposite of a strong wine. These wines contain little or no tannins, are juicy and fruity and easy to combine with many different dishes because of the subtle taste.
Firm
Sturdy wines contain medium to high tannins. They are rich and complex in taste and have a lot of depth and body. Such a solid and robust red wine would therefore fit perfectly with a hearty steak or game meat, but if you drink it with a refined and mild delicacy or fish, it would drown out the flavors. Examples of strong wines are Tempranillo, Syrah or Bordeaux.
Spicy
When we talk about a spicy wine, you can think of Italian red wine such as Amarone. Montepulciano or Chianti. In these varieties, the flavors of spices and herbs are clearly present. In spicy wines, for example, you can recognize herbs such as pepper, rosemary, cloves or nutmeg, but also licorice or bay leaf. And wine with a spicy character is often medium-weight and goes well with dishes with meat or with a tomato sauce such as pasta bolognese.
Aromatic
With an aromatic wine we mean that the wine is explosive and intense in its smell and rich in taste. You can recognize different scents present in the wine, for example herbs, flowers, wood types or (exotic) ripe fruit. A good example of an aromatic white wine is, for example, Viognier or Muscat: white wines with a seductive, strikingly perfumed aroma and taste.
