Last month, the Information Center Nutritional Supplements & Health (IVG) announced that vitamin D has been selected as the food supplement of the year 2021. Every year, this agency does research into the use of and trends in nutritional supplements. This year, no less than 70% of the 2,500 respondents indicated that they used a vitamin D supplement. In particular, the role that vitamin D plays in promoting resistance was an important reason for the selection.
Vitamin D
Sun vitamin, Vitamin D is produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight. But what if the sun – for example in winter – doesn’t shine sufficiently on our skin or – as in these times of lockdown – we have to stay indoors a lot? Then taking it is the best way to get enough vitamin D. Other groups that would do well to take a vitamin D supplement are young children (0-4 years), menopausal women, seniors (70+), veiled women and people with dark skin tones. Pregnant women and people who don’t go outside due to chronic diseases also benefit from taking vitamin D.
Vitamin D3 supplementation
Vitamin D has three different variants: calciferol (D1), which is found in small amounts in oily fish and egg yolk. Ergocalciferol (D2) is the vegetable variant. Vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol is by far the most important form and can be produced in the human body under the influence of sunlight. Yet that production is not always optimal and we are dependent on supplementation with vitamin D3. This is partly endorsed by the Health Center.
Scientific developments
Winter depression, osteoporosis, muscle relaxation and also the resistance can improve through supplementation with vitamin D3. In recent years, a lot of research has been done into various disorders in relation to vitamin D deficiencies. For example, research is being done into the connection with Multiple Sclerosis, depression, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease and type 1 diabetes. The results are promising
