The founder of ZENZ Organic Products is the Danish environmentally conscious hairdresser Anne-Sophie Skjødt Villumsen. ZENZ Organic Products is a professional series of high quality hair care products, based on natural and certified organic ingredients.
From the very beginning, Anne-Sophie has focused on creating eco-friendly products that are gentle on both hairdressers and customers, without compromising on quality. The ZENZ Organic product line contains products with fragrance and products without fragrance.
The choice between healthy hair and a healthy environment is a choice you don’t have to make when working with ZENZ Organic products. ZENZ Organic stands for a sustainable beauty industry with respect for customers, employees and the environment. With the organic products from ZENZ Organic of Danish origin you avoid SLS, MI, parabens, PPD, PTD, resorcinol, ammonia and microplastics.
All our products are made from the best and cleanest natural ingredients such as organic cold-pressed avocado oil and organic purified aloe vera. They are produced under strict conditions and most products contain only vegan ingredients. Our products are not tested on animals and the packaging is made of recyclable plastic – Anne-Sophie Skjødt Villumsen.
Interview
After I received a number of products, I became very curious about this Danish brand. I was allowed to do an interview with founders Anne-Sophie Skjødt Villumsen and Jørgen Skjødt which you can read below.
1. HOW DID ZENZ ORGANIC PRODUCTS START AND WHAT MOTIVATED/INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR PRODUCT LINE?
ZENZ Salons has from the start been a front runner for a more healthy and sustainable beauty industry focusing on natural, organic and healthy ingredients combined with professional performance and exclusive treatments.
In 2010 when we looked at the brands that we used in the salons, we could see that there were many ingredients that did not comply to our standards and there was beside this also a lot of greenwashing in the industry. We could not protect our hairdresser and consumers against harmful ingredients and the impact on the environment.
As our mission is to work for a more healthy and sustainable beauty industry, we decided to create the first line where professional functionality and performance where combined with science and certifications regarding health and sustainability.
We wanted to inspire the industry and share knowledge to start a movement to reduce the beauty industry impact on health, environment and climate.
2. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN CREATING ORGANIC PRODUCTS?
When you work to create natural, exclusive and high performance and quality products that complies with Swan, AllergyCertified, Cosmos, Vegan and EC standards for Organic Certified ingredients you find that cost are higher and performance is difficult to achieve.
Therefore we have been working closely with the production, development, hairdressers and consumers in our salons and that is how we have overcome the challenges and created high performance, quality and a professional line used in more than 1.200 salons around the world.
3. DO YOU HAVE SOME PERSONAL FAVORITES AMONG YOUR PRODUCTS?
We love all our products and the favorites change throughout the year. For the moment Anne-Sophie loves the summer products especially the saltwater spray number 15 and the styling gel number 12. For Jørgen it is the styling paste number 6 and sun oils number 94 and 95.
The saltwater spray and oils gives a good protection for hair and skin during the summer and the gel and paste gives you great styling performance for all hair types.
4. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO CONSUMERS WHO WANT TO TRY ZENZ ORGANIC PRODUCTS?
To get the real change from traditional products to healthy and sustainable products you have to go all in and exclude products with silicone as they give a film on the hair and scalp so the natural balance doesn’t work and give you hair and scalp problems.
If you still mix with products with silicones you won’t get the benefit and function from the organic/healthy products. So choose products without silicones and use them for a period, then you will see the result and get healthy and natural hair and scalp.
All ZENZ products are without silicone, but you can also find single products from other brands without it.
5. WILL THERE BE NEW PRODUCT LAUNCHES FROM ZENZ ORGANIC PRODUCTS THAT WE SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO?
We just launched rhassoul treatment number 16 which is an all in one shampoo for hair and body based on rhassoul mineral clay which gives both healthy hair and a very special exclusive experience, that everyone that who tries it loves. We have had overwhelming feedback from consumers.
In September we will launch our new shampoo and conditioner with the lovely natural cactus as scent. It is full of vitamins and ingredients with impact that stimulates the hair follies, gives hair growth and moister to the hair and scalp.
Both products are developed after we were inspired on a trip to Morocco some years ago. After we returned we started to develop and find ingredients that could both give the impact on hair and body that we wanted and could be certified by Swan and Cosmos.
Later this year ZENZ will also launch a body wash, handwash and a hand gel, so you as a consumer have the whole product portfolio for daily hair and body care.
As you may know I love dry shampoo and the Zenz Hair Powder no. 89 is next level. This powder gives a lot of volume and is ideal when you want to give your hair more body or when you go for an updo. It doesn’t leave a white haze but gives maximum volume.
The product that I’m especially curious about, but have not yet tested, is the Zenz Hair Rinse & Treatment Fresh Herbs no. 87. This lotion cleanses your hair and scalp and makes it shiny, fuller and soft with a mix of aloe vera , chamomile, apple, mulberry, apricot and peach.
