Beauty College Care Cosmetics

A few weeks ago I was present at the Beauty College of Care Cosmetics in Barendrecht. Here I followed a number of Masterclasses together with other sweet beauty bloggers, vloggers and journalists. During these Masterclasses we got a look at the latest trends in the field of beauty treatments.

Reading Mardge Pascaud DNA + skin care

Mardge Pascaud

The first reading was by Mardge Pascaud, who explained the future of beauty through a fascinating DNA story. Mardge Pascaud, founder of Pascaud Beauty Innovations is specialized in skin and cosmetic chemistry and develops products and methods with a scientific team. One of the collaborations is about DNA and skin, in collaboration with Professor Maurice Zeegers, professor of Complex Genetics and Epidemiology at the University of Maastricht.

Aging. Where does the story begin?

DNA

“At het Human Genome Project. This is a study by a very large group of scientists from many countries. From 1990 to 2003, that is 13 years, they investigated how the human DNA works. We have succeeded in charting the DNA of 1 person, so to speak, to unravel the human code. And guess what? Our genetic material consists of only 4 letters: a, t, c and g. These stand for adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine, which we call nucleotides, the building blocks of our DNA.

Our entire body is made up of cells; and genetic material is present in every cell of our body. The complete code can therefore be found in every cell and the DNA tells us who we are: what do we look like, what are our preferences and even how we think.”

Facts about DNA

“You can imagine that with those letters that form our DNA, you can make words and if you can, you can also make sentences. We call those sentences genes. Instructions within the DNA are called a gene. To give an impression of how extensive this is to write that code, I often visualize this with a picture with several bookcases, filled with 174 thick books. What is in those books? Nothing but pages with combinations of the four letters. If I want to read that 1-person code line by line, so your personal DNA code, then I have been working for 11 years! So that code is so complex and also unique. What is always nice to say is that, despite our difference in DNA, we also look alike. If we look at all the pages with letters, then 173.5 of mine is the same as yours. Only 500 pages make me different from you.”

DNA and skin aging?

“The moment a cell starts to divide, our DNA is duplicated. That happens all day and that also makes us older. Biological aging therefore has to do with gradual changes in our DNA and that includes degeneration of all kinds of things; worse vision, worse hearing, osteoporosis and decreasing muscle mass.

Abnormal or pathological aging means that we can get diseases that we do not want but that are established in our DNA. The question is, can you influence that yourself? If your DNA is fixed at birth, is it a certain fact whether you will develop a certain disease and how your skin image will develop? If you know which aspects you are sensitive to, for example staining or sagging skin, then you can do a few things preventively and you end up with the role of DNA. We call this epigenetics and that determines whether or not genes are expressed.”

How does it work?

“You have to look at the phenotype, those are all observable characteristics. What do you look like today and connect this with measurements. How much do you weigh, what is the depth of your wrinkles, what is your blood pressure? The genotype is the code with those letters that was recorded at your birth. You should match those two types and that is only possible through research. We can map your genetic profile by testing biological material, such as saliva or cheek mucus. This way we can map your genotype and if we do we can unravel your personal beauty key. If we combine that outcome with the phenotype, then we have the most ideal analysis. However, you must know where to look for this information.”

And …

“We now know that DNA is a mega-complex and a giant code and that is why we work via SNPs (pronounced snips). These are pieces on the DNA that demonstrably find a different letter in different people. For example, that could cause your skin to form more wrinkles or more pigmentation spots. Retrieving such a SNP is a costly, long-lasting history, but it is necessary because it is impossible to map your entire DNA to decrypt your personal beauty key. We pay attention to five aspects, that is hydration, pigmentation, inflammation, glycation and how sensitive you are to oxidative stress. If we can extract this 5 from your DNA and match it with the current phenotype, then we have your personal beauty key and we know exactly what things you should do. In addition, lifestyle factors also play a role.”

Future

“Through DNA analysis, we know for which visible effects of skin aging you have a predisposition. We can then personalize cosmetics. In this case, the analysis results in your personal code where there is a match with your personal serums. A serum is, as is known, a powerful drug complex and this is in line with your analysis. The serum can be used day and night under a cream. The analysis and the personalized serums will be available under the Pascaud brand from January 2020.”
