Visit to the city of Leiden

Last month it was my birthday and my family and I were invited to celebrate this day in the beautiful city of Leiden. For me it was quite a few years ago that I have been in this city, but what a nice city this is! There is so much to do for young and old, there is something beautiful to discover on every corner of the street and everything is close to each other. This birthplace of Rembrandt has a historic city center with beautiful canals, city gates, mills, terraces on the water and beautiful monumental buildings with unique facades.

Leiden is very well located for foreign tourists. Centrally located between Amsterdam and The Hague and only a 20-minute drive from airport Schiphol. This bustling and cozy city has pleasantly surprised me, because you can shop endlessly and enjoy delicious food by the water, so I am definitely planning another visit with friends. For now I’ll show you what the day looked like for me and my family and why a visit to the city of Leiden is worth it.

Parking

Parkeergarage Lammermarkt

You can park in the middle of the city at the Lammermarkt parking garage. This parking garage is an experience in itself, the round and light parking garage has a clear one-way traffic route and the parking spaces are wide.

My youngest is a big fan of everything that has to do with nature and animals, but also of history and how everything came about. At the Naturalis he was amazed, especially at the Dino Time department, with Trix, a 66-million-year-old skeleton of the tyrannosaurus rex, as his favorite.

There are many places in Leiden where you can enjoy a pleasant meal by the water. Brasserie de Poort stood out for me because it is located in one of the last two city gates in Leiden. Their “We Love to Share” concept is inviting, cozy and delicious. Here you share a table full of fresh fish, a good piece of meat and the tastiest vegetarian dishes. Are you on the boat? No problem, at Brasserie de Poort you moor in front of the door and there is room for several boats.

Canal Cruise

When you are in Leiden you really have to get out on the water. This city is even more beautiful from the water and you sail past the cozy terraces, green parks and beautiful buildings. At Bootjes en Broodjes you can rent a sloop so that you can sail yourself or take a boat trip with a captain.
