Have you ever thought about starting your own make-up line, your own brand? Then you are probably also aware that it’s a considerable investment to make this dream come true.
Now, as a beauty blogger, I’m talking about starting your own make-up line, but maybe you have thought about marketing a perfume or clothing, shoes, sunglasses, jewelry. Everything is possible. The major retailers such as Ulta and Sephora, with the best brands in the customer base, will always stay, that doesn’t mean that there’s no more room for new innovative brands. There are plenty of examples of independent brands that have become very successful by bringing unique products to the market.
In fact, in the midst of a global pandemic, beauty brands have big sales increases due to all online orders. Maybe you think that starting your own make-up line is more for someone who is already in the beauty industry, such as a beauty blogger. Yet many brands were also created by a creative idea, a lack in the market or a passion for cruelty-free products, for example.
Start your own make-up line
The examples of (well-known) bloggers / influencers and celebs who create their own make-up line or brand are now endless. Those success stories give you the motivation to continue to realize your dream, but creating a brand involves an incredible amount and it’s not something you “just” do “. Certainly not if you have a job and you are busy building your own brand next to your work and / or family.
What do you have to think about when starting your own make-up line?
You have to think about what you want (ingredients, colors, etc.), how it should look in terms of design, a logo, etc. In addition, you have to find a supplier that you want to work with and who can carry it out. When it comes to setting up a make-up line, I now know that the minimum purchase per product is considerable. Think thousands and not hundreds. Of course that makes the purchase price per lipstick or mascara more attractive than if you only have a hundred made, but the amounts you have to pay with such large decreases are enormous. In addition to the purchase costs, you also get development costs and order costs.
Market research start your own make-up line
As a small start-up, you may compete with big brands. Brands that have a lot of dedicated customers and large marketing budgets. Therefore, do market research before wasting time and money on a fruitless venture. By getting more information about competitors and the market, you get an idea of ββwhat prices to set per product and whether there is demand for it. Being unique and standing out from the crowd is the most important thing to create a formula for success. There is a need for an original product with a fascinating and authentic story.
Another smart thing to do before you start your new challenge ‘full speed’ is to evaluate your competitors. By studying your competitors you can learn a lot about the marketing in your industry. How do they communicate with customers? How do they use their social media channels? It is of course not the intention that you then copy everything, but let yourself be inspired and motivated. Determine what makes your brand unique and find a way to stand out.
Describe your own make-up line as a ‘person’
If your brand were a person, what kind of person would it be? When you start your own make-up line probably feminine, although the male mua’s on the internet are of course also great to look at. Is it a young or older person? How would this person talk to your target audience? The answers to these questions may never reach your customers, but they do give you an accurate sense of your brand. Think about how this personality would translate into, for example, your promotional material.
Financing the costs of starting your own make-up line
Building a brand isn’t easy, it takes a lot of time and money. Branding doesn’t happen overnight, but often takes months or years. It’s a process that requires strategy.
Then you end up with a product, but how are you going to sell it? That will also cost you money. Building a website, marketing, investing in your social media, etc. Marketing, for example, is a continuous effort that costs money, a good publicist can work wonders for your brand, but you have to dig deep into your pockets for that. Some starting entrepreneurs have already been able to save a good starting capital or have joined forces with an investor. Money can be the reason why you don’t chase your dreams and that is actually a shame.
If you don’t have the money and you think looking for an investor is too drastic, you can consider a loan. Do you want to apply for a personal loan? Make sure you first make a good comparison, so that you do not pay too much interest unnecessarily.
