Last month I was invited with a number of friends to visit this Free City for a day. Planning an international holiday remains uncertain for the time being, but luckily there is plenty to see and do in our own country. Looking for a versatile city trip within the borders? Be surprised by Free City Vianen. The authentic town is a fifteen minute drive from the city of Utrecht and is surrounded by water and greenery. Stroll along the boutiques and taste the atmosphere of the historic town. Could you still use some tips? VVV Vianen in the cozy Voorstraat provides you with the best to do’s in Vianen and the surrounding area. Full of inspiration and with a cycling or walking route in your pocket, you can enjoy a local beer on the sun-drenched terrace of the associated shop café.
VVV/FLINN café
We started the day with coffee and some snacks at the beautiful and new tourist office. VVV Vianen officially opened its doors on 3 June at a new location at Voorstraat 13 on the cozy Noordplein. The VVV of Vrijstad Vianen is housed together with the shopping café FLINN, a unique combination that provides a special VVV experience. A variety of plants, handcrafted wooden furniture, Scandinavian influences and soft and calm color tones create a relaxed vibe as soon as you set foot on the doorstep of the store. At the concept store you have come to the right place for lifestyle products from small-scale labels, an original gift, a beautiful home accessory or simply a moment of relaxation. Ready to shop? The smell of freshly baked oatcakes already greets you from the in-store cafe. Take a seat for a knuckle-root sandwich, homemade soup or salad. There is also plenty of goodies on the menu for guests who eat gluten-free or vegan. On a summer day you can find a spot on the spacious terrace for a snack board and a local Vijfheerenlanden beer.
Guided tour of the city center of Vianen
After the pampering at FLINN we were given a tour through the city center of Vianen by city guide Hans Kluit. This sweet man had such patience with us, luckily he also had to laugh a lot. Stroll through the narrow streets, browse special fashion boutiques and gift shops or treat yourself to local delicacies from the delicatessens. After exploring the authentic city center there are plenty of restaurants and terraces to recharge your batteries.
Taste authentic Italy at restaurant Mamma Mia
We were invited to have lunch at this lovely restaurant that has a large terrace on the water, the most beautiful terrace in Vianen. There we were spoiled with an extensive lunch. A must if you like Italian cuisine. Mamma Mia serves authentic Italian cuisine, all prepared with fresh local produce.
Discover the most beautiful places in the area / Fort Everdingen
Would you like to explore the nature reserves around Vianen by bike or E-Chopper? Then the route ‘Between Lek and Linge’ is the right choice. This tour takes you along the most beautiful places between the two rivers. Discover surprising, historic cities, each with its own character and enjoy the peace and nature in the Zouweboezem. The route takes you past old farms, the National Glass Museum Leerdam and the Wiel van Bassa, the largest wheel in the Netherlands. Of course there are also plenty of cozy restaurants included in the route for a well-deserved stopover. The E-Choppers were waiting for us at Van der Valk Hotel Vianen.
For example, you can drink an ice-cold beer at Fort Everdingen, a tower fort from 1874 that currently houses a real beer brewery. And you do not have time to explore everything in one day if you want to enjoy at ease with everything Vianen has to offer? Then stay the night in one of the cozy bed and breakfasts or Van Der Valk Hotel Vianen.
